Elijah Schaffer Blames Jews For The Slave Trade

Far-right propagandist Elijah Schaffer has a track record of antisemitic commentary which has only grown more explicit. During a recent broadcast, Schaffer promoted the debunked claim that Jewish people were responsible for the Atlantic slave trade, and claimed that some Black slaves were whipped because they were “lazy.”

Schaffer made the remarks during an interview with Sharika Soal, who said that not all slaves should have been freed.

Soal, a fellow Gateway Pundit contributor, told Schaffer that she believes in “divesting” from the Black community, which is “in shambles.” She explained that it’s “not my job as a Black woman to dedicate my life to protecting a man like George Floyd, who’s running around, beating up women, and robbing people.”

Soal added that she wants “nothing to do with ghetto Black culture” and “anti-whiteness,” and claimed that “pro-Blackness” means “pro-pedophilia.”

After Soal finished her rant about the “criminal Black man,” Schaffer pulled up a racist post on X (formerly Twitter) which he found funny. The post stated that “Black people should start life in jail and only be released if they act right.” Schaffer reposted this and wrote “This app is wild” alongside a tears of joy emoji.

In response to the post, Soal chimed in to say “They shouldn’t have freed all the slaves. That’s what I say. They freed some of the wrong ones. They should not have freed us all, as we can see here.”

Schaffer laughed and replied that “It’s true. But it’s like, that’s why they always — it’s like always when a group tells you that they’ve been kicked out of many countries, but never explains to you why it is that they kept getting kicked out. Or people say that Blacks were whipped — maybe they were lazy.”

“But here’s the point is that — the point is not all Blacks are lazy,” he continued. “Not all Blacks are like that because a lot of slave owners what? Were Black. So people don’t even talk about that. It’s like, it’s so easy to monolithically talk about a group of people without realizing how ridiculous it is.”

Schaffer then claimed that Jewish people “brought the slaves” to America after purchasing them from Black and Arab warlords.

“And let’s also be true here. Who brought the slaves?” he asked. “It was the Jews. Who did the Jews buy the slaves from? Either Black warlords or Arab warlords, right? So I mean, when they say the ‘Arab slave trade’ too, they’re just talking about a certain type of Middle Easterner. So it’s very complicated.”

The claim that Jews were disproportionately responsible for the slave trade is a long-debunked claim popularized by the book The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews. Written by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, the book and its conclusions were condemned by the American Historical Association in 1995.

The Association quoted historians David Brion Davis and Seymour Drescher, who said such claims “misrepresent the historical record.” They pointed out that “Jews played only a nominal role in the slave system in the American South,” and that, as a “tiny fraction of the white population,” they “never formed more than a minuscule proportion of slaveholders.”

And in an op-ed for the New York Times, historian Henry Louis Gates Jr. wrote that the “book’s repeated insistence that the Jews dominated the slave trade depends on an unscrupulous distortion of the historic record.”
