Yesterday the Internet was rocked by a horrific video, livestreamed to Facebook, that depicted a white teenager tied up with tape over his mouth. In the course of 30 minutes, viewers witnessed several people — all black — slicing up the victim’s clothes, cutting his scalp, making him drink from the toilet, and saying “Fuck Trump” and “Fuck white people.”

The four perpetrators, ranging in age from their teens to late 20s, have all been arrested and charged with hate crimes, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated battery, and unlawful restraint. Compounding the atrocity is the revelation that the 18-year-old victim is developmentally disabled.

Mainstream media outlets are clearly covering the crime, and the attackers will likely face a stiff penalty for it — and deservedly so. You might think that would satiate the white supremacist denizens of Twitter and GAB. Then again, you might not be familiar with just how much of a raving lynch mob they are.

The rest of the Twitter Nazis fell in line, latching onto the #RaceWar hashtag:

When the race war thing didn’t catch on, D’Marcus Liebowitz offered several other racist hashtags, hoping any one them would start trending on Twitter. They didn’t.

Instead, the hashtag #BLMKidnapping started to trend, based on the lie that the four attackers had anything to do with the Black Lives Matter movement or were inspired by it. None of the attackers referenced the civil rights organization in their video, and despite digging by conservatives and white supremacists, no references to BLM were made on their social media accounts. Indeed, it seems that the people genuinely using the hashtag are either extremely stupid or just racists who think all black people are part of Black Lives Matter.

Although it seems enough of these idiots spelled the hashtag wrong that they got #BLMKinapping trending. Then they blamed it on Twitter censorship:

Second only to the lie that this crime was in any way related to Black Lives Matter was the claim that, were the roles reversed, there would be greater condemnation and even riots. In other words, if the victim were black and tortured by whites we would see cities on fire by now.

Actually, we do have a comparable example where the roles were reversed. In May, 2015, a group of white Idaho football players were charged with raping a mentally disabled black teammate with a coat hanger. According to news reports, the victim in that case also endured months of racial harassment, and was forced by one of the perpetrators to sing a Ku Klux Klan song called “Notorious KKK.”

In late December news broke that one of the perpetrators, 19-year-old John R.K. Howard faced life in prison but took a plea deal. Ultimately Howard was sentenced to 2-3 years of probation plus 300 hours of community service. And, even there, the prosecutor informed the judge that “it’s not our belief that this was a racially motivated crime” but rather a “vulnerable-victim-motivated crime.”

And — spoilers — there were no riots. No cars set ablaze or stores looted. No widespread national coverage on television nor a sympathetic message from the President. But now the alt-right and mainstream conservatives expect us to believe that whites are only being peaceful (well, aside from threatening violence) because they’re just more civilized. We only riot at sporting events and pumpkin festivals, when we’re not leading armed takeovers of federal land, that is.

Regardless of whether these mouthbreathers are evil or just unbelievably stupid, what is clear is that white nationalists have exploited yet another tragedy to justify their hatred and blood lust toward people who don’t look like they do.
