Today the news broke that abolitionist Harriet Tubman will officially replace President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill — an entirely symbolic victory for people outraged by, say, chattel slavery and the wholesale slaughter of Native Americans, but a victory nonetheless I suppose.
One would think the choice to be entirely uncontroversial, as Harriet Tubman was someone that both conservatives and liberals should, theoretically, be able to rally behind. After all, she was a heroic, gun-toting, Republican woman of color who rescued some seventy people from the grim specter of slavery. Who could object to her? Well, if you guessed the people who don “Make America Great Again” hats while railing against Jews and “cuckservatives,” you’d be correct.
Yes, it seems the folks in the alt-right took time off from celebrating Hitler’s 127th birthday to complain about booting another genocidal monster off our currency. Here are a few choice reactions. First from Twitter:
Next, some noxious comments from Breitbart — the website that’s sucked up to GOP front-runner Donald Trump so blatantly that it’s been dubbed Trumpbart by detractors on the left and right:
And from Breitbart‘s official Facebook page:
Scott here thinks that we only put presidents on our currency. I must have missed Presidents Hamilton, Franklin, Marshall, Chase, Anthony, and Sacagawea:
We also seem to have attracted a men’s rights activist in the mix too:
This is too wrong for words:
Again, Tubman was pretty clearly not on the side of the Democratic Party when she was alive. Not that it should matter because she literally helped free slaves:
Oh for god’s sake…
