Over at Taki’s Magazine — an online cesspool that employs the likes of John Derbyshire and Steve Sailer — author/provocateur Jim Goad offered his unique take on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. For anyone who wasn’t paying attention, the nominees for this year’s Oscars were announced on January 14, 2016, and controversy erupted almost immediately.
Black actors, actresses, and directors were snubbed in major categories, including Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Picture. Of the 8 Best Picture nominees, none prominently featured African-Americans or dealt with issues relating to black culture or the black community. (Evidently this is only possible when the film is about Jim Crow and slavery, in which case some of the Oscar voters will vote “Yes” without watching.) Movies such as Chi-Raq, Straight Outta Compton, and Creed were conspicuously absent. To add insult to injury, the Academy can nominate a total of 10 movies for the Best Picture category, which means they could have picked two movies with black directors, actors, and actresses, but deliberately refused.
Which brings us to the ensuing backlash, talk of boycotts, and the reintroduction of the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag.
Or, as Jim Goad put it in an article titled “The Silent Minority,” “[T]here is nowhere on Earth that blacks have it better than the American media, yet still they gripe.” The article’s purpose was to downplay black anger over their near wholesale exclusion from the 88th Academy Awards by showing how much worse Hispanics are treated by the Academy. It’s a fair point that the racial homogeneity of the Oscars necessarily excludes other racial minorities such as Hispanics, Latinos, Asians, Native Americans, etc. Though that does little to negate the original criticism in the first place.
Nonetheless, Goad dismissed these criticisms altogether, accusing the black community of fostering a “culture of complaint” and having the temerity to voice their displeasure with anything so long as they live in America. Of Will Smith, who is boycotting the Oscars, Goad wrote, “[T]his uppity ingrate has announced that due to the fact that none of the major acting nominees this year is a Negro, he and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith will not be gracing this year’s Academy Awards ceremony with their coconut-scented presence.” Right before he says director Spike Lee is a “proud descendant of the pygmy peoples” and writing that the “Academy is so prejudiced against Bantus, they had selected black comic Chris Rock to host this year’s ceremonies.”
And although he appears to have run out of racial slurs for blacks, he still took an obligatory dig at the Jews, pointing out that media execs are “so disproportionately Jewish, one wonders why everyone is complaining about white people in Hollywood but no one makes a peep about Jews.”
There are more Hispanics in America than blacks. Why aren’t they bitching about this year’s Oscars like blacks are?
. . .
But many black Americans these days seem quite happy to promote a culture of complaint. More and more I suspect that beneath every Steve Urkel lurks a Black Panther. Millionaire black activists are crying again, and I appear to have run out of Kleenex. In both fantasy and reality, there is nowhere on Earth that blacks have it better than the American media, yet still they gripe. Will Smith has taken the fact that he’s a boring black guy and milked it to the point where his Hollywood career has given him a net worth of a quarter-billion semolians. Yet this uppity ingrate has announced that due to the fact that none of the major acting nominees this year is a Negro, he and his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith will not be gracing this year’s Academy Awards ceremony with their coconut-scented presence. Spike Lee, that noble auteur and proud descendant of the pygmy peoples, has likewise dropped out.
The Academy is so prejudiced against Bantus, they had selected black comic Chris Rock to host this year’s ceremonies. To show that he is not an Uncle Tom and to stick it to the industry that hates his skin color so much they chose him to host the Oscars, Rock is allegedly rewriting all his material for the show to reflect the unbearable lack of blackness among this year’s nominees.
. . .
I decided to check on what kind of people live in Beverly Hills, and it turns out that the city is 61 percent Jewish. And by a miraculous stroke of mathematical improbability, “all eight major film studios are run by men who happen to be Jewish,” or at least that was the case in 2008. Top media executives are so disproportionately Jewish, one wonders why everyone is complaining about white people in Hollywood but no one makes a peep about Jews.
We appear to live in a world where everything is “too white” but nothing can ever possibly be “too Jewish.” That seems like a dangerously fragile double standard. Interesting times.
